Chapter 8

The ferry lamp swung once and steadied. Mara held the box against her coat and waited for the old man to look up. “It was not mine to open,” he said at last. The river went on talking under the boards, the way it had all night, and neither of them wanted to answer it.

She set the box down between them. Whatever was inside shifted, lightly, like something turning over in its sleep.

Everything a reader needs

Read-along

For ebooks that include synced narration, such as those made with Storyteller, each sentence lights up as it is read.

Voices on your device

No audiobook? On Android, a downloaded voice reads any ebook aloud, and the text is processed on the device.

Offline dictionary

Tap a word to see what it means. The English dictionary works offline, and your lookups never leave the device.

Highlights and notes

Four colours, notes in the margin, and one list of everything you marked. Export it as text or Markdown.

Reading statistics

See how long you read and listened, by day and by book, and look back at each session.

Made for e-ink

A black-and-white theme with no animation and clear outlines, for e-readers that run Android.

Questions

All help and contact →

Is Parrot free?

Yes. The app is free to use with your own Storyteller or Audiobookshelf server. Parrot Cloud is in early access: by invitation, and free for now.

Where do the books come from?

From you. Parrot is a reader, not a shop: it opens the books on your server or the ones you add to Parrot Cloud.

Can I read without a connection?

Yes. Download a book and it stays on the device. Your place syncs the next time you’re online.

What do you know about my reading?

Books on your own server go straight to your device, except for files you choose to back up and excerpts you send for optional recaps. The app sends usage statistics and crash reports. With Parrot Cloud we also store your library and reading activity so they can follow you. The privacy policy has the details.
